Game of Thrones in Croatia

Where in the world is Croatia?

Have you ever heard the name of a place and wonder, “where in the world is that?” Well, you are not alone. Destinations like Croatia, for example, have been gaining popularity as an alternative to crowded vacations in other European nations like Italy or France. But, like many other Americans, you might be lost as to where to actually find it on a map.

In 2018, Google’s Year in Search revealed that Croatia was one of the most puzzling places people were looking for when starting searches that begin with the term “where is.” In fact, “Where is Croatia” was number two on the list. Clearly, Croatia is hot and a total mystery to find. For those who are unfamiliar with the country, the simple answer is that Croatia is in Europe. The more detailed answer is that it’s bordered by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. If you look on a map, it’s just across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. Basically, if you look at the “heel” and “calf” part of Italy’s boot, you’ll see Croatia on the other side of the water.

Well now that we found it, this might be the perfect time to plan a trip to actually go there. If you’re in the United States, starting in June you will find direct service between Philadelphia and Dubrovnik thanks to American Airlines. You can also fly to another European city before catching a connecting flight to Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Split or Pula. You can also take a ferry from various ports in Italy.

The tourist season is between April and October thanks in part to the nice weather and beautiful scenic views. The summer season is the most popular since Croatia is known for its spectacular beaches. The Dalmatian Coast, a narrow stretch between Zadar to the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro is a big draw.

There are also many other things to do in the country made even more famous by Game of Thrones. Dubrovnik and Zagreb, in particular, have incredible historic architecture, including fantastic churches, cathedrals, and museums, as well as delicious restaurants. In Dubrovnik, you can take wonderful walking tours and see where Game of Thrones was filmed while soaking in its rich history in the process.

You can choose from a variety of accommodations that cater to every budget, from social youth hostels to luxury beach resorts overlooking the sea. There is something for every budget here and you are sure to be satisfied.

Now that you know exactly where Croatia is in the world, plan your trip. Once you take your trip, you won’t just impress your friends with all your amazing vacation photos, but also you newly discovered geographical knowledge! Come visit Croatia.

If you are looking for a great way to see the city of Dubrovnik and explore its history and the Game of Thrones franchise, let Tour the Game of Thrones show you the way.

Great service and wonderful guides

Everything about this tour was exceptional. My initial enquiry to Tom was replied to very quickly and booking the tour was very efficient. We met Karmen at the very well explained meeting point for first part of the tour in the old town. She was incredibly knowledgeable about the city as well as Game of Thrones. She shared so many interesting facts about the show, showing us all the various filming locations and explaining how scenes were put together. I have a fear of heights which she managed to work round and also offered us some great advice about walking the city walls as I was nervous about doing this. Karmen also recommended a couple of restaurants which were great and when she discovered my husband works for a brewery she pointed out a little craft beer place. After this part of the tour Karmen took us to meet Neno for the second part of the tour. Neno drove us up to a stunning viewpoint and pointed out another filming location. We then set off for the Trsteno arboretum, we arrived to discover it had been closed due to very high winds. Neno was so apologetic, it was completely out with anyone organising the tours control but we were only charged for the first part of the tour which we felt was very decent of the company. Neno also dropped us back to our hotel rather than in the old town which was hugely appreciated. Both Neno and Karmen are fabulous guides, full of knowledge about both GoT and the history of the city and country. The advice about restaurants, things to see and how to tackle walking the walls all meant that not only did we have a great time on the tour with them we thoroughly enjoyed the rest of our time in Dubrovnik. Thank-you.
